On May 24, at about 3:20 p.m., the KRPF responded to a
call regarding a missing person. A snowmobile had been found tipped on its side
next to the river with no sign of the operator. Witnesses reported having seen the
man driving the snowmobile on the river earlier the same day. The village was
searched and no sign of the man was found. The Canadian Rangers were activated
for a period of 24 hours. The Rangers were deactivated on May 25 due to safety concerns
and because the search and rescue mission had been reclassified a recovery
operation. Volunteers had been searching the river since the 24th. Drones were
used to check the surrounding area and a helicopter was chartered on June 2 to
help with the search. Divers of the Sûreté du Québec (provincial police) were
unable to help due to the danger of moving ice on the river. The operation has
been terminated as per confirmation received on June 6.
