On August 15, 2017, a group of geologists traveling by helicopter discovered human remains near an abandoned snowmobile about 25 kilometers away from the Northern Village of Ivujivik.
Once advised, KRPF officers went on site in order to establish a
perimeter and carry meticulous searches to determine the circumstances
of the deaths. They also examined and cross-referenced information from
the database of missing persons.
The investigation is still ongoing but based on the first
observations from the police, all indications are that there were no
criminal activities that had resulted in these mortalities. The experts
from the Laboratoire de sciences judiciaires et de médecine légale
(forensic science laboratory) will analyze the remains to identify the
victims. The Laboratoire is an autonomous unit delivering expertise
services in the scientific and medicolegal fields.
