How old do I have to be to possess and buy cannabis?
In Quebec, the minimum legal age to possess or purchase cannabis is 21 years of age. It is prohibited for people under 21 years of age to possess cannabis.
How much cannabis can I possess in a public place?
It is possible to possess a maximum of 30 grams of dried cannabis or its equivalent in a public place.
How much cannabis can I possess in a private residence?
The possession limit in a private residence is 150 grams of dried cannabis or its equivalent, regardless of the number of people who live there.
For example, if three people 21 years of age or over live in the same residence, the limit is still 150 grams.
A person 21 years of age or over may not possess more than a total of 150 grams of dried cannabis or its equivalent in all of his or her residences.
Can I cultivate cannabis?
It is prohibited to cultivate cannabis for personal use. It is also prohibited to possess a cannabis plant for personal use.
Where is it prohibited to possess cannabis?
It is prohibited to possess cannabis in certain places, in particular places accessible to people under 21 years of age. For example:
- On the premises or inside daycares;
- On the premises or inside schools (including Adult Education Centres);
- Outside and inside detention centers.

Where can I buy cannabis?
The only place to legally buy cannabis in Quebec is from the Société québécoise du cannabis (SQDC). It is illegal to buy cannabis from anywhere or anyone else.
Use of cannabis
What are the restrictions?
It is prohibited to use cannabis in any public place (inside and outside).
What has not changed?
- It is still prohibited from driving under the influence of cannabis.
- It is still prohibited from being under the influence in a public place.
- It is still prohibited for people under 21 years of age to possess.
- It is still prohibited from cultivating cannabis.
